The winners of the 2012-2013 Student Entrepreneurship Venture Competition

1st Place: Neural Analytics – Up to $30,000 in Funding

Bleeding or swelling of the brain due to head trauma can increase the pressure inside a patient’s skull (ICP). Elevated ICP is dangerous and may be fatal if left untreated. The gold standard for measuring ICP requires a neurosurgeon to drill a hole in the patient’s head and screw in a sensor. This procedure is often not performed due to the resources required and associated risks. Recognizing this unmet need, researchers in the UCLA Department of Neurosurgery have developed a non-invasive alternative to assess elevated ICP. The technology uses an algorithm and patient database to correlate elevated ICP with an ultrasound measure of blood flow in the brain. Neural Analytics is building RapidICP, a hand-held head trauma screening tool that encapsulates this technology. RapidICP will target a domestic total addressable market of $2B including first responders, the military and various clinical settings. http://www.neuralanalytics.com/

2nd Place: Oncolung – Up to $15,000 in Funding

OncoLung offers a non-invasive, simple blood test that aids in the early diagnosis of lung cancer at relatively low cost. The test is performed by measuring the concentrations of a panel of specific biomarkers in patient’s blood.

3rd Place: VuPad – Up to $5,000 in Funding

VuPad is a mobile augmented reality (MAR) app that enables users to preview name brand furniture scaled-to-size in their own space from the comforts of their home. Using the camera in a tablet, the VuPad app dynamically places high quality 3-D furniture models in the viewing panel so that users can rotate and arrange furniture the way they like in a specific room. http://www.vupad.co/
