Magdalena Balonis is a Technology Strategist for the UCLA Engineering Institute for Technology Advancement. She is also a Research Scientist and a Lecturer at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at UCLA where she currently works on the projects related to the thermodynamics of chemical reactions in cementitious systems. She is also involved in several research efforts focusing on the art conservation within the UCLA/Getty Conservation program. She is a member of the American Ceramic Society and the Nanocem-European Research Network for Cementitious Materials. Her expertise is in inorganic building materials particularly in cement-based binders, reinforced concrete corrosion inhibitors, geochemical thermodynamic based modeling and chemical treatments for deteriorated calcium based surfaces. She received her M.S. from the AGH-University of Science and Technology in Cracow (Poland), and in 2010 she received her PhD in Chemistry from the University of Aberdeen (United Kingdom).
